Well, it may be time to repipe the water system in your home, especially if it’s 30 years or older. Older homes, originally constructed with metal pipes and fittings, are especially susceptible to corroding, rusting, and bursting. This can lead to water, mildew, and mold inside the walls.

Additionally, drinking and cooking water becomes smelly and tastes bad when flowing through rusted, corroded pipes filled with layers of built-up minerals and sediment. Cleaning the drains and pipes is not a solution because that won’t deter the aging process.

Replacing old pipes with similar metal pipes is an expensive and time-consuming process. Many holes need to be made in the walls, the old pipes removed and the new pipes connected by soldering them so they can go around corners and fit into awkward spaces.

But a recently developed piping system called PEX–made of polyethylene–eliminates these problems. It’s flexible, continuous, lightweight and can easily be inserted in walls, maneuvering around corners without its being soldered. It can even be inserted alongside the old pipes, eliminating the need for removing them. This saves time and costs for the installation. PEX also saves you money on your energy bills because it has a low thermal conductivity rate.
